This course demystifies carbon credits by explaining how emissions trading systems and voluntary carbon markets function, why they were created, and what role they play in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The course provides foundational carbon literacy for built environment professionals, with context relevant to LEED v5.

Carbon credits are frequently cited in sustainability strategies, net-zero commitments, and climate policies, yet the mechanisms behind them remain complex and opaque to many professionals. Confusion around terms such as carbon credits, carbon offsets, emissions trading systems, and voluntary markets has contributed to inconsistent application, unrealistic expectations, and skepticism about their effectiveness.

This course is designed to demystify carbon credits by clearly explaining how carbon markets work, why they were developed, and how they have evolved over time. Participants will explore the historical origins of emissions trading, the structure of compliance and voluntary carbon markets, and the role of international climate agreements such as the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement in shaping today’s systems.
