The WELL ecosystem has expanded beyond a single certification model to include multiple Ratings and portfolio-scale pathways designed to support health, safety, equity, and well-being across diverse organizational contexts. This course clarifies the role of WELL Certification, explains the intent behind WELL Ratings, and introduces WELL at scale as a strategy for organizations managing multiple buildings or global portfolios. Learners will explore how organizations combine these pathways over time to align health goals with operational realities, investor expectations, and tenant needs—without treating WELL as a one-size-fits-all solution.

As organizations increasingly prioritize health, well-being, and social sustainability, the WELL Building Standard has evolved to support a broader range of use cases, scales, and strategic objectives. Today, the WELL ecosystem includes WELL Certification, a growing set of WELL Ratings, and WELL at scale—each offering different ways to recognize progress toward health-centered outcomes.

This course provides a clear, decision-oriented overview of the WELL ecosystem, helping learners understand what WELL Certification is, why WELL Ratings were introduced, and how these pathways differ in scope, focus, and application. Rather than treating Ratings as simplified versions of certification, the course explains how they serve as targeted tools—allowing organizations to address specific priorities such as health and safety, equity, base building performance, operations, or sector-specific needs.

The course also introduces WELL at scale, a portfolio-based approach that enables organizations to deploy consistent health strategies across multiple locations while maintaining flexibility for regional and operational differences. Through real-world examples, including how large global organizations leverage multiple WELL pathways, learners will see how certification, ratings, and portfolio strategies can coexist as part of a long-term health framework.

By the end of the course, participants will understand how the expanding WELL ecosystem supports incremental progress, builds trust with occupants and investors, and helps organizations embed health into both physical spaces and operational systems—without locking themselves into a single pathway.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain what WELL Certification is, including its purpose and role within the broader WELL ecosystem.
  2. Describe the intent of WELL Ratings, understanding how they provide targeted recognition for specific health, safety, equity, operational, or sector-focused outcomes.
  3. Understand why the WELL ecosystem continues to expand, and how new Ratings are introduced to respond to market, investor, tenant, and operational needs.
  4. Differentiate between WELL Certification, WELL Ratings, and WELL at scale, recognizing how each pathway supports different organizational strategies.
  5. Identify scenarios where organizations may combine multiple WELL pathways, rather than pursuing a single certification approach.
  6. Recognize how WELL at scale supports portfolio-wide health strategies, particularly for large or global organizations.
