๐ World Environment Day with GBRI: Why It Still Matters in a Changing Climate
World Environment Day, established by the United Nations in 1972 and celebrated every year on June 5, is the largest international platform for environmental outreach, engaging governments, businesses, and citizens to take action on urgent environmental issues.
With the environment facing more pressure than ever beforeโfrom wildfires and rising sea levels to record-breaking heatwavesโitโs clear that we need more than just awareness. We need action. And one of the most powerful tools for action is education. According to NASAโs Global Climate Change portal, Earthโs surface temperature has risen dramatically in recent decades, driven largely by human activityโunderscoring the urgent need for widespread climate education and action. World Environment Day also aligns closely with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13: Climate Action, which urges all of us to take urgent steps to combat climate change and its impacts. This dayย reminds us that even small actionsโlearning something new, changing one habit, having one conversationโcan have a big ripple effect. To better understand the principles and practices of sustainability, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) offers a comprehensive overview of how individuals, communities, and organizations can make environmentally responsible choices every day.
A World Thatโs Changing Fast
Letโs face itโclimate change is no longer a distant threat. Itโs happening right now. From unpredictable weather patterns to increased flooding and drought, the signs are everywhere. According to the latest IPCC Climate Reports, human-induced climate change is intensifying weather extremes across the globe, making urgent climate education and action more critical than ever.
The science is clear, and so is the solution: we need more people who understand sustainability and are ready to act.
But where do we begin?
At GBRI, we believe it starts with learning. When weโre informed, we make better choices. And when we share what we learn, the impact multiplies.
