SS Credit: Heat Island Reduction

The coolest cities are not the ones with more air conditioningโ€”theyโ€™re the ones designed to stay cool.

ย What is the Intent of this Credit?

The goal is to:

๐Ÿ‘‰ minimize heat island effects

So that we:

  • improve microclimate
  • protect human health
  • reduce impacts on wildlife and ecosystems

๐ŸŽฏ Big Picture

Dark surfaces absorb heat โ†’ cities get hotter
LEED reduces this by cooling surfaces

๐ŸŒ What is Heat Island Effect?

๐Ÿ‘‰ Urban areas become hotter due to:

  • dark roofs
  • asphalt pavements
  • lack of vegetation

๐Ÿ’ก Why It Matters

  • increases cooling demand
  • worsens air quality
  • impacts human comfort and health

๐Ÿ“ Key Concept: SRI (VERY IMPORTANT)

โ“ What is SRI?

๐Ÿ‘‰ Solar Reflectance Index

Measures how well a surface:

  • reflects solar radiation
  • emits heat

๐Ÿ“Š Scale

  • Black surface โ†’ SRI = 0
  • White surface โ†’ SRI = 100

๐ŸŽฏ Exam Insight

Higher SRI = cooler surface

๐Ÿงฉ Two Compliance Options

โœ… Option 1: Non-Roof + Roof Strategies

Goal

๐Ÿ‘‰ Reduce heat from:

  • pavements
  • roofs
  • site surfaces

๐ŸŒณ Non-Roof Strategies

  1. Shading with Vegetation
  • trees or plants
  • must provide shade within 10 years
  • must be installed at occupancy

๐Ÿ‘‰ โŒ Artificial turf does NOT count

  1. Vegetated Planters / Structures
  • natural shading
  • improves microclimate
  1. Shading with Energy Systems
  • solar panels
  • wind turbines
  • solar thermal systems
  1. Shading Structures (Reflective Materials)

๐Ÿ‘‰ Must meet:

  • 3-year aged SR โ‰ฅ 0.28
    OR
  • initial SR โ‰ฅ 0.33

๐ŸŽฏ Memorize These Numbers

  1. High-Reflectance Paving

๐Ÿ‘‰ Same thresholds:

  • SR โ‰ฅ 0.28 (aged)
  • SR โ‰ฅ 0.33 (initial)
  1. Open-Grid Pavement

๐Ÿ‘‰ Must be:

๐Ÿ‘‰ โ‰ฅ50% pervious

๐Ÿ’ก Bonus Insight

๐Ÿ‘‰ Supports:

  • Rainwater Management credit

๐Ÿข Roof Strategies

  • high-reflectance roofs
  • vegetated roofs (green roofs)

๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ Option 2: Parking Under Cover

Requirement

๐Ÿ‘‰ Provide:

๐Ÿ‘‰ โ‰ฅ75% of parking spaces under cover

๐Ÿ“ What Counts as Covered?

  • underground parking
  • under building
  • under deck
  • structured parking
  • stacked parking

๐Ÿ“ Roof Requirements (VERY IMPORTANT)

Covered parking must have:

Option A:

๐Ÿ‘‰ 3-year aged SRI โ‰ฅ 32

Option B:

๐Ÿ‘‰ initial SRI โ‰ฅ 39

Option C:

  • vegetated roof
  • OR energy generation system

๐ŸŽฏ Memorize These Numbers

  • 32 (aged SRI)
  • 39 (initial SRI)

๐Ÿง  Where People Get Confused

โŒ Misconception 1:

โ€œAny shade countsโ€

๐Ÿ‘‰ No
๐Ÿ‘‰ Must meet:

  • reflectance requirements OR
  • vegetation OR
  • energy systems

โŒ Misconception 2:

โ€œArtificial turf counts as vegetationโ€

๐Ÿ‘‰ No

โŒ Misconception 3:

โ€œAll paving qualifiesโ€

๐Ÿ‘‰ No
๐Ÿ‘‰ Must meet:

  • SR thresholds OR
  • be open-grid

โŒ Misconception 4:

โ€œCovered parking means just roofโ€

๐Ÿ‘‰ No
๐Ÿ‘‰ Roof must meet:

  • SRI requirements
    OR
  • be vegetated/energy-producing

Official FAQs

What does SRI measure?
๐Ÿ‘‰ A surfaceโ€™s ability to reflect solar radiation and release heat
What percentage of parking must be under cover (Option 2)?
๐Ÿ‘‰ 75%
A project uses paving with initial SR of 0.30. Does it qualify?
No.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Must be:
โ€ข โ‰ฅ0.33 (initial)
OR
โ€ข โ‰ฅ0.28 (aged)
A project provides covered parking but the roof does not meet SRI requirements. Does it comply?
No.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Roof must meet:
โ€ข SRI thresholds
OR
โ€ข be vegetated/energy-generating
Why does LEED encourage both shading and reflective materials?
Because:
โ€ข shading reduces direct heat gain
โ€ข reflective materials reduce heat absorption
๐Ÿ‘‰ Together, they minimize heat island effect
Why does LEED allow solar panels as shading devices?
Because they:
โ€ข reduce heat gain
โ€ข generate renewable energy
๐Ÿ‘‰ Provide dual benefit
