What would a school look like if it were intentionally designed to support mental health? While many public schools are built with security and efficiency in mind, research shows that nurturing, thoughtfully designed environments are far more conducive to student well-being and academic success.
Studies consistently demonstrate that access to nature, generous daylighting, open and welcoming campus layouts, and supportive learning spaces can reduce stress and anxiety, decrease behavioral challenges, and improve overall academic performance. Yet these research-based strategies are not always fully integrated into school design and decision-making.
In this session, Claire Latanรฉ โ professor of landscape architecture at Cal Poly Pomona and practicing landscape architect since 2006 โ explores practical opportunities to create supportive learning environments. Drawing from her work in regenerative design and community engagement, she examines interventions ranging from furniture and classroom improvements to campus-wide design strategies that promote inclusion, resilience, and mental well-being for children and adolescents.
This webinar was originally recorded in 2022 and makes references to CHPS that may have changed. As of June 2025, CHPS became part of the Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
