2 LEED General CE Hours | 2 AIA HSW LU

Biomimicry is a new paradigm in design and innovation – a design philosophy and process that studies nature’s biology and imitates these models to solve human design problems.  Join us to learn about biomimicry with examples of designs and systems that mimic nature’s design lessons; including natural forms, models, measures, and biological processes to deepen sustainable methodology. Examine the built environment with our expert instructor to identify how biology systems can be used as blueprints to solve design problems in the architectural and engineering spheres more sustainably and how they can fit within the parameters of LEED.  Examine innovative design solutions that are well-adapted to life on earth over the long haul by emulating nature’s 3.8 billion years of time-tested patterns and strategies.

This course provides an overview of biomimicry principles and description of various biomimicry design strategies in sustainable design process. The presentation clearly explains what biomimicry is and allows to gain a good understanding of how the use of biomimicry can enhance and add value to building design. The course includes a number of case studies providing an understanding of how biomimicry works through analysis of real-life design strategies and gives a very good basis for further research, as they case studies and course material is thoughtfully selected, but at the same time some topics are not discussed in a detailed manner. I have also found the course visuals to be of very good quality providing valuable support to the learning process

While the course content includes a detailed description of various biomimicry strategies in relation to LEED rating system structure, I did not notice a direct reference to Living Building Challenge rating system as stated in learning objective #2.

I would recommend this course to anyone interested in biomimicry, even without design and engineering background.
