Sustainable and green buildings continue to gain momentum as designers seek solutions that balance performance, preservation, and purpose. As part of GBRIโ€™s case study series highlighting innovative green building projects from around the world, this course examines the transformation of a former U.S. Army warehouse into an educational facility for university students at the San Francisco Art Instituteโ€™s Fort Mason campus. This adaptive reuse project demonstrates how historic structures can be thoughtfully reimagined to meet contemporary sustainability goals. The building was redesigned to prioritize energy efficiency, achieving an estimated 83% reduction in energy use compared to conventional benchmark buildings. Through an audio-visual case study format, learners will explore how architectural and engineering decisions contributed to the buildingโ€™s performance while respecting its historic fabric. The project offers valuable insights into adaptive reuse, energy-efficient design, and the role of existing buildings in advancing a more sustainable built environmentโ€”illustrating strategies that align with the performance expectations of future buildings.
