Governments all over the world are aware that climate change might be the cause of political instability, mass migration and refugee crisis in very near future. Yet, they don’t seem to be doing much to tackle this grave problem that needs immediate solutions.
Take the example of US military. Did you know that the US Defense Department is world’s single largest oil consumer? According to a study published by the Brown University, the Pentagon, which oversees the US military, released about 59m metric tons of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in 2017. This means that the US Defense Department emits more greenhouse gasses in one year than several industrialized countries, including Sweden and Portugal!
“If it were a country, its emissions would make it the world’s 55th largest contributor”, said Neta Crawford, the study’s author and a political scientist at Boston University.
