New Zealand bans new permits for offshore oil and gas exploration

In an attempt to tackle climate change and move towards clean energy future, New Zealand government has announced that it will no longer issue any new permits for offshore oil and gas exploration.

The decision under Labour Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is a change in direction after nine years of conservative leadership which favored expanding the industry. Her Government has pledged to reduce the country’s net greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050 and also plans to plant 100 million trees annually and ensure the electricity grid runs entirely from renewable energy.

However, the new ban will not affect existing permits for exploration or extraction, meaning the industry is likely to continue in the nation for several more decades.
