Negative impacts of fashion industry on environment: A truckload of clothing is wasted per second | GBRI

When we think of greenhouse emissions, the images that come to mind are those of factories and vehicles spewing smoke. Emissions from industries and transport sector often come under scrutiny for their negative impact on our environment, but few of us realize that fashion industry is also a big culprit when it comes to carbon emissions.

According to a new report, fashion industry’s current “take-make-dispose” system creates greenhouse gas emissions of 1.2 billion tonnes a year—that’s “more than those of all international flights and maritime shipping combined.”

Alarmingly, the negative impacts of the fashion industry are set to drastically increase. “If the industry continues on its current path, by 2050, it could use more than 26% of the carbon budget associated with a 2 degree pathway,” the report warns, referencing the threshold for avoiding dangerous global warming.
