How much exercise do you get on an average day? Did you know that less than 5% of American adults participate in the recommended 30 minutes of physical activity per day? This has led to some wide-ranging societal issues, including obesity and the health problems that come with it. More than two-thirds of adults are considered to be overweight or obese, which can lead to diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke. We need to build our environments in a way that promotes physical activity and fitness in order to combat these seriously detrimental public health issues. In some circles, this is known as “active design”, and has been recognized in some green building rating systems such as the new WELL standard.
