Chances are, if you work in the green building industry, you have heard the term “commissioning” (commonly abbreviated as Cx), and its various forms. But, what is commissioning? The term actually is quite old and comes from shipbuilding. A commissioned ship is one deemed ready for service, after having all of its equipment properly tested, and the crew trained. In other words, the ship goes though a thorough quality assurance process. Building commissioning takes the same approach and applies it to new buildings. When a building is initially commissioned,it goes through an intensive quality assurance program that begins during design and continues through construction, occupancy, and operations.
