Why is America’s transportation system so outdated, why should we care, and what can we do about it? America, despite its wealth, often seems to be falling apart in terms of the infrastructure especially the transportation infrastructure. American society of civil engineers routinely give its transport structures poor marks, rating roads, rails and bridges as deficient or functionally obsolete. The current rating is D+. Most developed countries have a rating of C or above.

About

According to a World Economic Forum study America’s infrastructure has got worse, by comparison with other countries, over the past decade. Overall, the US has gone from a 5th place to a 24th place in the World Economic Forum’s ranking between 2002 and 2011. In order to make the US more competitive for businesses, the infrastructure investments are crucial. Several indirect jobs are created due to these investments, as well as the increase of the consumption index. While re-building America’s infrastructure – can we look at sustainable options? Are there existing frameworks or rating systems like LEED for transportation infrastructure?

Join us as GBRI senior Research Associate Paul Johan-Seim explores this topic in detail.

What Are USGBC Pro-Reviewers Saying?

“This course introduces us into the transportation universe. In an organized manner, the presenter develops the state of the US transportation system, why it requires further investment, its relationship with the economy and the benefits of green infrastructure. The last part of the course is devoted to present some study cases, explaining how sustainable strategies were implemented through the use of the ENVISION and INVEST rating systems.

After completing this course, I am more able to understand the relationship between the economy, the transportation system and its impacts on the environment. Some valuable strategies were mentioned, such as stormwater management, solar lighting and automatic means of analyzing pavement status.”

GBRI USGBC Education Partner“The dedication to details and the excellently structured delivery of this presentation provides an interesting history of transportation in the American continent and it’s sad infrastructure decline. The financial component pieces were well described and makes one realize how interrelated, and therefore at the mercy of ‘individual’ viewpoints that have exacerbated the decay of our road, rail and associated structures.”
