Enrolled students must take and pass the short quiz in order to earn CE credits. In addition, this course Calming the School Environment: Creating That Just Right Feeling needs to be self-reported. Self-reporting information will be accessible once you complete the Quiz.

In this session, two architects with a long history of designing high performance schools will describe the elements that go into creating a calm environment conducive to student performance and well-being. Speakers will touch on the basics of a high performance school environment and why it matters, biophilic design, trauma responsive design (also called trauma informed design), and features that support special needs students, among others.

What you will learn

  1. Participants will be able to identify the built environment stressors on users, especially those with trauma, sensory processing disorder, and anxiety or other emotional disorders.
  2. Participants will be able to define the characteristics and qualities of a high performance school.
  3. Participants will be able to list the attributes of the built environment that positively impact learning and user experience.
  4. Participants will be able to assess existing schools and determine changes and alterations needed to improve the environment for users, incorporating the high performance schools criteria.
