About the Webinar

In this session, two architects with a long history of designing high performance schools will describe the elements that go into creating a calm environment conducive to student performance and well-being. Speakers will touch on the basics of a high performance school environment and why it matters, biophilic design, trauma responsive design (also called trauma informed design), and features that support special needs students, among others.

Objectives

  1. Participants will be able to identify the built environment stressors on users, especially those with trauma, sensory processing disorder, and anxiety or other emotional disorders.
  2. Participants will be able to define the characteristics and qualities of a high performance school.
  3. Participants will be able to list the attributes of the built environment that positively impact learning and user experience.
  4. Participants will be able to assess existing schools and determine changes and alterations needed to improve the environment for users, incorporating the high performance schools criteria.

Irene Nigaglioni, President, IN2 Architecture

Irene Nigaglioni, AIA, ALEP, President, IN2 Architecture, offers varied experience in institutional facilities. Her experience in the design of academic facilities ranges from renovation to new construction. As President of IN2 Architecture, Irene is involved in all aspects of a project, including master planning, schematic design, design development, construction documents and contract administration. Irene is considered a leader in Educational Planning, as she keeps up with the latest instructional curriculum trends in school design and has earned recognition for this receiving the A4LE Lifetime Achievement Award. She is very active in A4LE, serving as Chair of the Southern Region Foundation. She is also very active in the lecture circuit, presenting at conferences such as A4LE, Ed Spaces, TASA/TASB, School Facilities Forum, and CASH. Irene serves on the CHPS Board of Directors, has served on the CHPS National Technical Committee, and is part of the TX-CHPS leadership team.

Aaron Jobson, Partner, Quattrocchi Kwok Architects

Aaron Jobson, AIA, ALEP, Partner and CEO, Quattrocchi Kwok Architects, comes from a family of educators and has a passion for creating dynamic, sustainable learning environments. He is known for his innovative projects, and advocacy on many issues related to educational facility design. Aaron has been involved in the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) for more than 10 years through projects and as a Board member. A founding member of the School Energy Coalition, Jobson is a legislative advocate for energy efficiency measures affecting schools in California and a leading voice on sustainability. He is also one of the creators of Folia, a prefabricated two-story steel classroom building that dramatically reduces design, permitting and construction time on projects to market. Jobson’s work, passion and advocacy has garnered his reputation as a thought leader on how school facility design directly impacts academic success – a subject on which he has spoken about at national education conferences. In 2015, Jobson was certified as an Accredited Learning Environments Planner (ALEP) by the Association for Learning Environments (A4LE).
