Millions of costumes are produced that are worn once and then tossed, or are never sold and eventually end up in landfills. The most nightmarish aspect of Halloween is the level of consumption that occurs because people buy millions of costumes and decorations made out of plastic and paper and decorate houses with energy consuming lights and yard decorations. • Green Your Halloween

Halloween is a holiday of sweet indulgences, but don’t let that stop you from being eco-conscious. While it may be hard to replace every Halloween novelty with an earth-friendly one, there are some options available. Read on to learn how to green your Halloween without losing the holiday spirit.

    Choose your costume wisely
Most costumes sold in large stores are cheaply made, but expensive. It is hard to rationalize spending $40 per child on a costume that can be toxic if it has plastic details or a plastic mask, both of which can contain PVC or traces of lead. Instead, create a custom costume from clothes you already have or clothes from a second-hand store. Thrift stores are great for finding cheap accessories. Plus, you encourage your children’s creativity while spending quality time together.
